Hola!
So I am writing this while I work at the Information Desk in the Young Student Center. I figured I hadn’t written in a while and since this is a pretty slow night, it seemed like the perfect time! My job as an “info-desker” is one of the several positions I have here at KSC. It’s a work-study job, which is a type of financial aid that students can be given where we can work part-time on campus…it doesn’t necessarily mean that you can study while you work, although sometimes it is possible! My job entails working at the info desk during designated shifts and answering people’s questions about the campus, events and Keene. I’m also apart of the student center set-up crew where we set-up rooms for lectures, concerts and other events. I work with awesome people and it’s by far one of my favorite places to work on campus….the Academic and Career Advising Center being right up there too of course!!
Last Sunday I got back from one of the most amazing experiences of my life, Alternative Spring Break in Savannah, GA. I explained a little about what ASB is in my last blog post. So here is just an outline of what I did while I was visiting the South.
Friday, March 14th we loaded up two vans around 7pm and headed out for a long and not too comfortable drive to South Carolina. We arrived in Myrtle Beach around 11 Saturday morning and spent the day on the beach and along the boardwalk doing some souvenir shopping. That night, I experienced my first Tornado warning. I had never been that far south and have lived in Maine all my life so the idea of a tornado PETRIFIED me!! Of course the warning came that night when we were all driving around town in our 15 passenger van looking for a place to eat. We watched lightening strike a transformer in a parking lot next to the street we were attempting to drive down. That was cool to see! Anyway the tornado warnings subsided without an actual tornado hitting so we went to dinner then returned to our hotel rooms to get some much needed rest!!
The next day, Sunday, we hung out in Myrtle Beach for the day then headed down to Savannah, GA which was only another 4 hours or so. We stayed in a hostel for the full week in Savannah and met some really cool people from all over the world!! We were given St. Patrick’s Day off to relax and enjoy the city. We took a historic trolley tour and wandered around the beautiful cobblestone streets.
The rest of the week we worked at the Boys & Girls Club. They assigned us a project painting a large hallway on the second floor of the building. We painted Tuesday-Thursday 10am-2pm then worked with local at risk youth of all ages after school. We helped them with homework, played games/sports and did arts and crafts with them. Friday they had a “carnival” where we did arts and crafts, face painting, LOTS of games, easter egg dying, etc. They ended the day with an easter egg hunt and we gave the kids and staff t-shirts and hats from different KSC events so they had something to remember us by. Overall it was a great experience!! I made a lot of great connections with the kids there and it really was hard to say good-bye on Friday…especially to the 75 degree weather!!
Okay, well I guess that’s about it for now. I’ll try to update this thing more regularly! I also hope to add some pictures from ASB later…so keep checking back.
