A Day in the Life of Crystal

The Final Stretch….

What a BEAUTIFUL morning!

Good morning!!! Today is looking like a fabulous day. I just left a 7am Peer Advising meeting and am now working at the information desk. I have another meeting at 11am with the Orientation core staff, some homework to finish up and then classes from 2-6pm. Yeah, so the schedule is looking a little plump today but this is my typical Thursday! At least I don’t have any classes tomorrow! It is a little hard to stay on top of things with the nice weather that we have been having. Today’s high is 76 degrees!!! :-) Let’s hope I can stay focused! Hopefully my work won’t take too long to finish and I can hang out on the quad for a bit before class. I also think it’s very unfair of the school to have the commencement fair for students graduating in May - a month before actual graduation!! As exciting as it is to walk into a room and get information on what it’s like to be alumni instead of a student - it’s a tease to give students their caps and gowns when they still have four weeks of classes and finals to complete! Graduation is sooooo close but yet still sooooo far!

Don’t get me wrong - I’m not in any hurry to leave Keene State. Actually, I love Keene soooo much that I’ve applied for a job here in Admissions. We’ll see how that goes!

Alright time to get back to work. Have a fabulous day!

Busy at work kinda…okay not really

Hola!

So I am writing this while I work at the Information Desk in the Young Student Center. I figured I hadn’t written in a while and since this is a pretty slow night, it seemed like the perfect time! My job as an “info-desker” is one of the several positions I have here at KSC. It’s a work-study job, which is a type of financial aid that students can be given where we can work part-time on campus…it doesn’t necessarily mean that you can study while you work, although sometimes it is possible! My job entails working at the info desk during designated shifts and answering people’s questions about the campus, events and Keene. I’m also apart of the student center set-up crew where we set-up rooms for lectures, concerts and other events. I work with awesome people and it’s by far one of my favorite places to work on campus….the Academic and Career Advising Center being right up there too of course!!

Last Sunday I got back from one of the most amazing experiences of my life, Alternative Spring Break in Savannah, GA. I explained a little about what ASB is in my last blog post. So here is just an outline of what I did while I was visiting the South.

Friday, March 14th we loaded up two vans around 7pm and headed out for a long and not too comfortable drive to South Carolina. We arrived in Myrtle Beach around 11 Saturday morning and spent the day on the beach and along the boardwalk doing some souvenir shopping. That night, I experienced my first Tornado warning. I had never been that far south and have lived in Maine all my life so the idea of a tornado PETRIFIED me!! Of course the warning came that night when we were all driving around town in our 15 passenger van looking for a place to eat. We watched lightening strike a transformer in a parking lot next to the street we were attempting to drive down. That was cool to see! Anyway the tornado warnings subsided without an actual tornado hitting so we went to dinner then returned to our hotel rooms to get some much needed rest!!

The next day, Sunday, we hung out in Myrtle Beach for the day then headed down to Savannah, GA which was only another 4 hours or so. We stayed in a hostel for the full week in Savannah and met some really cool people from all over the world!! We were given St. Patrick’s Day off to relax and enjoy the city. We took a historic trolley tour and wandered around the beautiful cobblestone streets.

The rest of the week we worked at the Boys & Girls Club. They assigned us a project painting a large hallway on the second floor of the building. We painted Tuesday-Thursday 10am-2pm then worked with local at risk youth of all ages after school. We helped them with homework, played games/sports and did arts and crafts with them. Friday they had a “carnival” where we did arts and crafts, face painting, LOTS of games, easter egg dying, etc. They ended the day with an easter egg hunt and we gave the kids and staff t-shirts and hats from different KSC events so they had something to remember us by. Overall it was a great experience!! I made a lot of great connections with the kids there and it really was hard to say good-bye on Friday…especially to the 75 degree weather!!

Okay, well I guess that’s about it for now. I’ll try to update this thing more regularly! I also hope to add some pictures from ASB later…so keep checking back.

I’m not very good at this…

Hello again!

It has been soooo long since my last post so I figured I’d do a quick entry before class. I actually have to keep a separate blog for my psych class and I’m keeping up with that just as well as I am here….

Anyway…life is getting crazy busy here! I have two classes left before my Spring Break officially begins and I can honestly say that I am really looking forward to some time to relax!! I actually leave tomorrow evening for Savannah, Georgia with about 10 other KSC students. We are taking a couple of vans down to Georgia for Spring Break to do volunteer work at the Boys & Girls Club there. It’s actually a school trip called Alternative Spring Break (ASB) which is put together by Habitat for Humanity. This is my first trip and I’m really excited!! Habitat puts together a few ASB trips each year. This year they are offering the Georgia trip, another to South Carolina where students are actually building houses and helping build a school and then another trip to Florida to the Everglades. To actually make it look like a “break” we are spending a night at Myrtle Beach….sooo much fun!!

Other than the school work, I have been trying to do some job hunting and get my resume and references together. EEK!! Time to be a big kid!!

Monday, the core orientation staff had our decision meeting to hire orientation leaders for this summer. Letters went out yesterday and I’m pretty happy with out final decision. We have a great staff and this summer’s orientation program is going to be a blast!! I can hardly wait!

Okay well I have five minutes to get to class…so I should probably end here. Have a beautiful day!

A little note before class…

So I think we decided that this blog is going to be more for you all to see what it’s like to be a student at KSC. This will pretty much be like online journal for you to see what a typical “day in the life” of a KSC student is like. So here we go…

This week has been pretty hectic with classes, homework, dance team, tutoring, orientation stuff, working at the info desk and all the other little things that need to get done. I can barely squeeze it all in! Dance team is heading to our first competition of the year on March 1st. We’re putting the finishing touches on the competition routine this week. Orientation stuff is going really well. KTV and I are collecting applications for Summer 2008 Orientation Leaders. Interviews start next Monday and I can’t wait!!! I’m having so much fun trying to get this program going for the upcoming summer. I can’t wait to finally have a staff selected and really get started on it all. Other than that, I’m just trying to stay on top of all my classes with everything else that’s going on. Wish me luck!

Here we go…

Hello!

So this is the start of a new thing for the KSC orientation program. A few orientation leaders, KTV (the other student coordinator) and myself are now blogging to keep all of you up to date with what is going on with the 2008 Orientation for first year students. We will try to provide you with as much information as we can regarding what to expect from KSC Orientation. We aren’t quite sure how this will go exactly but stay tuned to see what we come up with!!

:-)
